This is the first one with a cutaway. African mahogany back and sides, Sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony head plate, fret board, bridge, end graft, and heel cap, faux tortoise binding, abalone markers. It has a K&K Pure Mini pickup.

I'm really happy with the sound of this one. It's very clear and balanced. The new owner was very excited to see and play it which was very rewarding. Makes me want to do it again.

Nice wood combo and appointments. Bet it sounds great. That guitar would be a great tool in the hands of a gigging musician or an instrument to bring years of pleasure to the living room player.

I would really like to add a cutaway to my build. Though I'm unsure how exactly to do it and may lack the bravery to deviate from my plan.

The tiles are mahogany made from the cut offs of the back panels. I cut them so that the grain is aligned radially and I went to the trouble of book matching them across the guitar centerline but you have to look very close to tell at all. The two dark rings and the dividers are tortoise binding. A cool effect of that is that the clearish sections of the tortoise shell let you see down in and you can make out the sides of the tiles. It makes them look like they are floating in tortoise shell. It doesn't show up in the photos above, but the sound hole is bound with the tortoise binding too.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks and the tuners are Grover Rotomatics. I used them specifically because I could get tortoise buttons for them to match the tortoise binding. The bridge pins are dyed bone with tortoise dot inlays from Bob Colosi.

Btw, I got the mahogany for the back and sides from you.
